Steampunk started out as a sub-genre of science fiction, an idea that takes the reader back to typically the Victorian (England) era or Wild West (America) period. However Steampunk is more than just the clothing and the write speech patterns, steampunk was the past's future based on steam power rather than electricity. Popular authors of steampunk include H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Philip Pullman, Ada Lovelace, and more. Steampunk is no longer just a sci-fi or fantasy idea, steampunk is now a genre of art, music, fashion, and is now considered a lifestyle. Followers of the steampunk lifestyle don't just read the books and appreciate the art based on the ideas of steampunk, they embrace all of steampunk. Have you walked into an antique store or a thrift shop lately to see a display with the title of "Steampunk"? When I worked as a jewelry artist's assistant, I was hired for my knowledge of steampunk and the steampunk aesthetic. As I was setting up the display with my boss's jewelry and vintage pieces that could fall under this neo-Victorian style, he decided we needed to dress up our wire frame mannequin in steampunk fashion. He drove us to some of the other second-hand shops in town where I picked out pieces to create a whole steampunk look. Those that live a steampunk lifestyle dress every day wearing their Victorian-esque best including top hats and bustles. Others have gone to the extremes by making everything in their homes match their steampunk personalities. The most common themes in steampunk are earth tones and metallic tones of copper, silver, bronze, and gold; cogs and gears are also a staple of the fashion.
