This zombie story is anything but slow and lame. The Changed follows Christian (Chris) an ordinary guy with a regular 9-5 job and a fiancé as his life changes…or rather ends. The dead have simply stopped dying. When dead the heart stops beating, blood stops flowing, flesh starts to rot, and flies lay their offspring in any orifice they can fit in, but the brain keeps working and feelings continue. When the dead refuse to stay dead the world is faced with accepting a new “race,” the “Changed.” Christian’s life becomes increasingly difficult as he starts the fight for undead rights. When the world is afraid and would rather destroy that which they cannot understand, the Changed must do what they can to make the living listen and accept what is. Texas author, BJ Burrow, shines light on a subject rarely seen in zombie novels, humanity from the view point of the undead. Although Burrow’s characters face difficulties the mood is lightened with references to popular TV shows with zombie twists just when the reader thinks they can’t handle anymore of the gruesome details or the emotional struggle the undead face. The ending of The Changed will have you waiting to find out what happens next, will the zombies be destroyed, placed in concentration camps, or will they be accepted? The answer won’t be found in this novel so we’ll just have to wait and see if Burrow will finish this story in his next novel. *BJ Burrow is located in Austin, TX and grew up in Longview. Recently I traveled to see a personal friend in Longview for her birthday and to witness her fiancé propose, the day after the party all of her guests were invited to attend a Zombie Walk to help raise funds and awareness for Drug Free Youth programs. A costume contested was an added bonus to the fun and was judged by Mr. Burrow. Burrow co-wrote The Monster Hunter that was shown on the Sci-fi channel and starred David Carradine. Getting to meet Mr. Burrow was a great experience; he's down to earth and passionate about writing, and a big zombie fan. On a personal note my friend's fiance was chosen as first place in the males' category as a zombie hunter-turned-zombie. | Second Release Cover Art by Axel Torvenius |
